Altus Sport (2019)

South Africa
2019-2022

In brief

Altus Sport’s ‘Life’s a Ball’ programme has five pillars through which positive values, personal development, physical activity, literacy and girl empowerment are promoted through sport:

  • Let’s Coach: works on personal development, leadership, sport skills, working with kids and values.
  • Let’s Move: works on sports skills, physical activity, fitness, movement and rhythm and values.
  • Let’s Read: works on reading, understanding, pronunciation, ball skills and values.
  • Let’s Lead: works on leadership, self-confidence, health, finances and sport.
  • Let’s Think: works on brain fitness, chess, concentration, strategy, proactive, ball skills and values.

Problem to be tackled

Altus Sport works in areas with poverty, abuse, weak education, weak family structures, no sport or proper physical activity opportunities, no role models (from highest to lowest level) or with a lack of basic values.

Local partner

Altus Sport’s Life’s a Ball is a fun-filled sport educational programme which aims to assist kids and coaches in mainly less advantaged communities to expand their sporting environment and equally equip them in making positive choices in life.

This includes promoting leadership skills, health issues, non-violence, gender equality and sound financial choices. Through the Let’s Read and Let’s Think educational component, the kids gain valuable scholastic benefits. As the Life’s a Ball programme is based on physical activity and sport, it stimulates fitness and teamwork.

Altus Sport’s focus is holistic and the impact is multifaceted rather than individualistic; participants, youth leaders and communities are affected by the work done. Although Altus Sport works within a holistic framework each participant receives the individual support that is needed within a marginalised community.

Beneficiaries

The project will be working with youth from townships and deprived areas with lacks of physical activity, education, life skills, positive attitude and hope. Having these programmes provides these kids the opportunity to learn the skills of seven different sporting skills. Disciplines are athletics, hockey, netball, basketball, cricket, football and rugby.

SOL’s contribution

With support of The SOL Foundation Altus Sport will be able to continue und expand their Life’s a Ball programme, which will create youth leaders and support boys and girls through the annual programme.
