The Jaffa Institute (2018)

Israel
2018-2019

In brief

The Jaffa Institute offers a tennis programme to give the children in their programmes the opportunity to exercise, gain new skills and bond with one another in a new setting. The aim is to help children develop skills such as perseverance, focus and self-esteem.

Problem to be tackled

The Jaffa Institute operates in some of the most deprived and poverty-stricken areas in Israel, where the unemployment rate is double that of Israel’s overall census and at least 50% of the households live below the poverty line. Children living in poverty are exposed to stressful and often dangerous circumstances, many of whom are confronted with community and family violence, including neglect and/or abuse, along with marginalisation from other children and various other forms of trauma; participation gives the beneficiaries access to various social, physical and mental health benefits of sport.

Local partner

The Tennis Programme is based at the Nussdorf & Mark Families Israel Tennis Center in Jaffa.

The programme runs all year round, students spend approximately three and a half hours each week participating in the programme. Beside tennis they benefit also from yoga classes and self-defence courses, homework assistants, hot lunches, educational materials, participation of special events, insurance coverage and transportation to and from the venue.

Beneficiaries

The Tennis Programme aims at children between the ages of 6-12, both boys and girls; the participants are going to be recruited from two different Centres:

  • children with special needs all having emotional, psychological or behavioural difficulties from the Makom Ba’lev After-School Centre and
  • children with behavioural or learning difficulties from the Bet Metsuba After-School Educational Centre in the Hatikva Quarter in East Tel Aviv.

SOL’s contribution

For the programme year 2018/2019, The SOL Foundation assists The Jaffa Institute in the further development of their Tennis Programme; SOL helps the programme to grow by over 50%.

Project partner

The Jaffa Institute, founded as a private, non-profit and multi-service social agency, aims to assist severely disadvantaged children and their families from the impoverished communities of Jaffa, South Tel-Aviv, Bat Yam and Bet Shemesh in Israel.
