In brief

Founded in 1987, Mathare Youth Sports Association is Laureus Sport for Good’s as well as SOL’s longest-standing partner and also one if the largest, working with over 30’000 young people each week through a variety of football-centred programming activities focused on sexual reproduction rights, HIV/AIDS education and prevention and employability.

Problem to be tackled

The Mathare Valley Slum, home of Mathare Youth Sports Association, is the second largest slum in Nairobi with over 600’000 residents. Youth comprise over 80% of the entire valley’s population and recent data published by the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey indicate that half of all new HIV infections occur among young people aged 15-24 years, girls are twice as likely to be infected as boys the same age, and there are significant barriers to accessing sexual and reproductive health services.
