The SOL Foundation assists Jugend Eine Welt in the Bo district in Sierra Leone with a sport programme to meaningfully engage and support youth in today’s rapidly changing world; there, due to idleness, many youths are forced into crime, early pregnancy and drug addiction.
Problem to be tackled
Poverty in Sierra Leone. Vulnerability is evaluated based on socioeconomic factors. These factors include for instance the children’s health risks, the condition of the communities in which the person has lived in, the family relations, the children’s level of poverty, source of livelihood, level of education attained or reasons for the discontinuing education.
Jugend Eine Welt’s charitable project aims to help the local population through child protection, education, medical care, emergencies and sports. The project partners have been promoting sports such as football, volleyball, basketball or athletics for children and young people in Sierra Leone for more than ten years.
In addition to the sports activities, the beneficiaries will be taught health issues including HIV/AIDS and non-communicable diseases, which is becoming a burden according to the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health.
As there are currently no local trainers available, the project aims to train local inhabitants to become coaches to promote sustainability of the sports programme while at the same time offering leadership and long-term involvement in the Don Bosco work.
The beneficiaries are children and adolescents aged between 6 and 17 years, 70% male and 30% female.
The youths and children in Bo district are lacking both recreational facilities and equipment to play sports. Young people, particularly girls, are the most vulnerable to the precarious social situation. Sport is an efficient method to meaningfully engage and support youth in today’s rapidly changing world. Due to idleness, many youths are forced into crime, early pregnancy and drug addiction.
With the support from The SOL Foundation, Jugend Eine Welt will be able to duplicate and implement their existing sports programme in Sierra Leone conducted in Lungo to and in the Bo community to sensitise the beneficiaries on their own potential, strengthen their self-confidence and encourage them to lead their lives far beyond crime on the streets.
