Girl Determined works to equip girls with the skills, confidence and support system to navigate Myanmar’s changing landscape, increasing their access to new potential benefits, while avoiding the growing number of pitfalls.
Problem to be tackled
Given the period of quickening change in Myanmar, risks of school dropout, trafficking, labour exploitation, early marriage and perpetuated cycle of poverty especially for girls have exacerbated. At the same time, the shifting landscape is creating the greatest potential opportunity for girls to access education, health and livelihood opportunities than at any time in Burma’s modern history. There are great risks and also great opportunities at play in the current transition to a more free and open economy and political system. Without targeted, specific investment in girls’ personal and group leadership skills, girls will be left out of this change and will certainly be unable to influence its shape.
